Over 25 students from Weber School District's five high schools recently participated in a career day focused on firefighting and emergency medical services. The event provided students with the opportunity to learn about the skills, equipment, and resources required for these critical professions.
During the day, students rotated through three skill stations: medical, extrication, and fire. They had the chance to practice medical procedures, simulate vehicle extrications, and operate firefighting equipment. The goal was to give students a realistic understanding of the challenges and rewards of a career in public safety.
“This was a great opportunity for students to learn about these careers firsthand and see how classroom concepts apply to real-life situations,” said Dr. Rod Belnap, CTE Director of Weber School District.
The event was organized by the Weber School District in partnership with the Ogden City Fire Department and North View Fire Department. It was the second year the district has offered this type of career day for students.
“We want to inspire students to consider careers in public safety and provide them with the information they need to pursue those paths,” said Melissa Powell CTE Coordinator from Weber School District.
Students who are interested in pursuing a career in firefighting or EMS can take fire science and emergency medical technician (EMT) courses through the district. They can also seek out internships with local fire departments or hospitals to gain additional experience. Thank you to Chief Deputy Shelby Willis with Ogden City Fire Department and Ryan Barker Deputy Chief/Fire Marshal for North View Fire Department along with all the other crew members who made this event possible.
